How can I access my old HDD on a new Windows 10 PC?

I built a new PC a couple of years ago, reusing some components from my old Windows 10 machine. Unfortunately, the external drive I was using for backups failed, and I've realized some important files didn't transfer to the new setup. My last hope is the HDD that was left in the old PC. It's a SATA 6 GB drive, and I purchased a SATA to USB adapter to connect it to my new machine. However, when I plug it in, the drive isn't recognized at all. I've checked for driver updates and tried different USB ports, but nothing works. I'm wondering if the HDD is defective or if having Windows installed on it could be causing the issue. Is there any way to get my new PC to recognize this drive so I can recover my data?

It sounds like you've done some good troubleshooting. If the new adapter lights up but the HDD doesn't spin up or show any activity, it might be a sign that the HDD itself is faulty. Sometimes it helps to try a different USB port or another computer, just to rule out the possibility of a bad adapter or port.

Yeah, I agree. It could also be worth checking if the HDD is getting power. If you have a power supply that can provide power through USB, that might help. Otherwise, trying a different SATA connection directly to your motherboard—if you can—might give you another option.

Just a heads up, if the HDD was previously connected to a different Windows installation, it shouldn't cause any issues just being plugged in via USB. It may be worth checking if the drive is recognized in Disk Management—sometimes it doesn’t show up in File Explorer but can be found there. If it's not showing up at all, unfortunately, the HDD might be beyond repair.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll check Disk Management to see if it pops up there. Fingers crossed!
