Looking to Learn Python as a Mathematician – Where Should I Start?

Hey everyone! I've got a Master's in math and over ten years of experience in academia, investment banking, and research. I've dabbled in Java, Python, MatLab, Mathematica, and SQL, but I wouldn't say I'm proficient in any of them. I'm really aiming to dive into research, and I've noticed that strong programming skills, especially in Python, are becoming essential. Given my background, I'm wondering what bootcamp, certification, or program would be best suited for someone like me, who's close to 40 and has little kids, meaning my time is pretty limited. I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

Think about what niche you want to pursue: Data Science and Machine Learning are both math-heavy, but they approach things differently. If you're open to it, Actuarial Statistics might also be a good fit given your math experience. And don't overlook roles like Product Owner or Scrum Master that might utilize your teaching background!

I’m leaning towards data science. Does that sound like the right path to you?

If you’re short on time, I'd suggest looking for GitHub repositories that offer Python tutorials. This way, you can learn at your own pace whenever you have a moment to spare. Video courses might not be the best fit since they require more dedicated time.

I agree! Plus, you can always ask specific questions if you get stuck. Just keep it simple and stick to small projects.
