Help! My iPad Stopped Working After an Update – What Are My Options?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a jam here with my iPad and could really use some advice. About a month ago, it started acting up and I couldn't access settings, apps or even back things up. When I tried to update it through iTunes on a couple of different laptops, it just wouldn't work and eventually ended up in recovery mode with an error (9). I've lost 5 years of artwork on it and I'm freaking out a bit.

Here's the scoop: the iPad is a refurbished 10th generation with 256 GB storage, but I only used about 40 GB. It's never been backed up to iCloud, and previous issues include a black screen with the Apple logo. Some people are saying it might be a failing storage chip, which terrifies me. My main questions are:

1. If it's not recoverable, should I pay someone to try to recover the data? Can Apple do that?
2. I have an Apple Pencil (1st gen) attached to it. If I get a new tablet, will it still pair with that?
3. I don't remember my Apple ID. If I wipe the iPad, and I log in again, will it ping the old device?
4. Lastly, my iPad is still under limited warranty. Do these issues qualify for any kind of repair?

Pinging for your Apple ID on the old iPad shouldn’t be a problem. When you sign in on another device after wiping, it should just ask for your credentials without reaching out to the old one. If your iPad is under warranty, definitely ask Apple about potential repairs.

I get why you might not trust Apple, but they usually have the best resources for recovery. If the storage chip is failing, though, recovery could be tough and pricey. Honestly, I'd suggest asking Apple about your data recovery options first—they might have better success or at least point you in the right direction.

Yeah, I’ve heard Apple can be hit or miss with data recovery, but sometimes they surprise you. Good luck!

It sounds like you're dealing with some serious issues. If the storage chip is toast, then good luck recovering anything. Just be prepared that sometimes, data might be completely gone, which really stinks. As for your Apple Pencil, you should be able to pair it with a new tablet without issues as long as it's supported.

Thanks for clarifying that! I just really hope I can recover my artwork!
