Is It Worth Trying Linux for Gaming on My Hardware?

Hey everyone! I'm thinking about trying out a Linux distro on my system, which has an i3 4005U, 8GB of RAM, and an 820M Fermi GPU. I've downloaded a couple of distros like Mint XFCE and Cachyos to test the performance. However, after doing some quick research, I'm a bit hesitant due to concerns like the poor performance of the Nouveau drivers and other compatibility issues. I'm curious whether it's even worth pursuing this or if there are any workarounds for my legacy 390 supported graphics card. What do you think?

Honestly, there are workarounds, but I don't think it's really worth it for gaming. Your GPU doesn't support Vulkan, so using Proton won't give you great performance. You might get security updates on older distros, but the gaming experience won't be stellar.

What games are you trying to play? Just keep in mind that Linux won't magically improve performance if your hardware isn't up to par. You need at least the minimum requirements.

I’m looking at Company of Heroes, Far Cry 2, and especially Primal. Just wanted to see if I could squeeze out a few more FPS, but I get what you're saying.
