Is the 7800X3D a Better Upgrade Than the 5800X3D Right Now?

I've been dealing with low FPS in modern games for a while now, using my old 3700X, which I upgraded from a 1700X. My graphics card is a 3070, and I'm running a motherboard from 2017. With current prices, the 5700X3D and 5800X3D CPUs are really overpriced, but I've noticed that 7800X3Ds are now around $230, which is the price of a 5700X3D. I'm looking for better FPS in my games, but I'm confused about the best choice. Also, I've seen the 5950X going for about $250, which appears to deliver similar performance to the 5800X3D in games. I want a CPU that can also handle tasks like Lightroom more efficiently, especially since I think the slowness might come from editing over NAS or system lag.

I'd be cautious about the 5800X3D; some games won't take advantage of its caching. If you're looking for a solid upgrade, maybe consider grabbing a new GPU instead if you're gaming at 1080p. The 3070 is starting to show its age, and you'd likely see a bigger performance boost there!

Totally agree! An upgrade to a newer GPU would likely enhance your gaming experience way more than just focusing on the CPU.

The 5800X3D is no longer being made, so upgrading to one isn't the best option right now. The 5700X3D is a decent choice too, but if your budget allows for it, the 7800X3D is a significant upgrade overall. Just keep in mind that switching to AM5 means you'll need a new motherboard and RAM on top of the CPU cost.

Yeah, if you’re opting for AM5, you definitely want to consider future-proofing your setup.

Getting a 5700X3D for $230 would be a solid deal, especially since you can find them for $300 used right now. But if you can stretch your budget, doing a full AM5 setup with the 7800X3D will pay off better in the long run, even if it costs more upfront.

True, but remember, you'll also have to factor in the costs for a new motherboard and RAM. Do you really want to go all in right now?

Honestly, I got the 5950X not long ago and it did help my FPS a bit, but I quickly found that it still struggled with CPU-heavy games at 1440p. If you play a lot of CPU-bound games, you might want to skip the old AM4 CPUs altogether and lean towards something like the 7800X3D for better performance. However, if you do heavy editing in Lightroom, the 5950X might actually serve you better since it's better for intensive tasks.

That makes sense. If most of your projects are personal, waiting for better prices on the 7800X3D could be worth it.
