How Important is the Linux Distro Beyond Just the Basics?

I've been using Linux Mint as my main operating system, and recently started experimenting with Arch. I'm curious about how much the choice of distribution really matters aside from having a package manager. For example, if I wanted to install Cinnamon on Arch or switch out my desktop environment on Ubuntu, would that be a big deal? Does the base of the distro affect how well things work together?

Honestly, the most critical factors to consider are package management and the release cycle. Beyond that, it’s really about personal preference regarding DEs and user experience. Stick with what's comfortable for you!

Distributions definitely have their own flavor thanks to unique package managers and pre-installed software. They’re tested for compatibility, making sure everything runs smoothly for users. If you switch out a desktop environment like KDE on Linux Mint and hit a snag, don’t expect as much support from the Mint community since they focus on their default setup. Overall, it’s fine to swap DEs; just know a minimal distro might offer you more flexibility if you’re looking for a highly customized experience.
