Hey everyone! I've been out of the PC building scene for quite a while, and with my wife urging me to upgrade our gaming rigs and HTPC, I'm feeling a bit lost on current CPU options. Since I last built a rig back in 2010, the landscape has changed a ton. I've been hearing mixed things about Intel's 12th to 14th generations. Some say they're great and others warn about overheating and instability, especially with the i3 models. On the flip side, I've considered going with AMD's AM5 platform but I find their prices quite steep. I'm trying to figure out if investing in the newer Intel chips like the i3 12100F is wise if I'd want to upgrade later to an i7, or if I should just bite the bullet and go AMD for better future-proofing and stability. Any advice on what would be the best route given my tight budget? Thanks in advance!

If you’re really tight on cash, consider looking for used hardware. You can often score some excellent gear at a fraction of the cost. Just make sure to check for any warranties or return policies.
Intel has claimed they've resolved past issues, but the trust factor is a big deal. If you plan on upgrading down the line, AMD’s AM5 platform is expected to support new CPUs until 2027, making it a safer bet for stability. Plus, it’ll probably save you money in the long term if you get into preferred parts now.
A lot of folks are skeptical about Intel's 13th and 14th gen due to previous issues, and honestly, with your budget tight, I’d steer you towards AMD. For around $200, the Ryzen 9600X outperforms most Intel options and puts you on a solid future-proof platform. The i3 12100F might seem cheap, but it's not a great value for money compared to other options out there.
Totally agree with you! I'm also checking out AMD for my build.
Thanks for the helpful advice! I'm looking at my options here.
I hear you on that. I think AMD might be the way to go for me.
