Is Apple Maps Still Powered by Google?

I've been having some frustrating issues with Apple Maps on my iPhone, and during a chat with AppleCare, a support rep kept mentioning Google Maps instead. I was confused because I thought Apple and Google parted ways in the mapping world a long time ago. Is there any current connection between Apple Maps and Google Maps that I'm not aware of, or was the advisor just mistaken?

Nah, Apple Maps has never been powered by Google Maps. The guy you spoke with sounds like he was just not paying attention. You’re right about Apple separating from Google a long time ago. Maybe they should get some training for their support staff!

Yes! It’s totally unacceptable that a senior advisor didn’t know this. It should be basic knowledge.

True! I just had a similar experience where the support team was clueless, and it’s frustrating when you need help.

The advisor was definitely mistaken! Apple Maps was criticized when it launched back in 2012 because it wasn’t anywhere near as good as Google Maps. Now, Apple sources data from places like Foursquare and Yelp, but not Google. You're not out of the loop; it sounds like the advisor was just misinformed.

I thought the same! It’s frustrating because it seems like a basic fact that they should know.

Totally agree! Sometimes you get a rep who doesn’t know their stuff, which is just weird.

Nope, Apple Maps has been on its own for years now. They built their own database and don't share mapping data with Google anymore. I have had a similar frustrating experience with Apple support where the rep didn't know what they were talking about. It happens, unfortunately!

Right? It’s annoying when you’re trying to get help and they don’t even seem to know the basics.

Exactly! It feels like sometimes they just read off a script instead of actually helping.

You were definitely being gaslighted! Apple Maps operates independently and has its own set of data. Sounds like the advisor was having an off day or didn't know what they were talking about. I’ve seen Apple Maps improve, though, it used to be pretty bad—but now, it’s getting better!

You’re right about the improvement! I remember when it launched too, it was rough. Now I actually use it sometimes.

Same here! I compare it with Google Maps, and it’s getting a lot closer, but the connection to Google is a no-go.
