I'm running Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.1 on my gaming rig with an RTX 2080 Super using the 575 driver. In Windows, I can play Bioshock Remastered at over 200 fps on my 180hz monitor without any issues, but in Mint, the game only runs at 60 fps when I have my other 60hz monitors and a 60hz TV connected. The frame counter shows over 200, but the game feels choppy, especially with v-sync turned on, which locks it at 60 fps. When I disable the other monitors and just use the 180hz monitor, the game runs smoothly again, and v-sync locks it at 180, which is great. This raises a couple of questions: Is this a limitation of Proton or X11? Is there a way to enable 180 fps while the other monitors are active? I've tried different Proton versions and switched from Flatpak to system versions of Steam and Discord, but the performance issue remains. Could my previous attempts to screen capture with Discord be affecting this, or is it something else entirely?

This is actually an X11 limitation you're facing. If you switch to a Wayland compositor, it should resolve the issue. Unfortunately, Linux Mint doesn’t officially support Wayland, but if you’re willing to try, installing KDE Plasma or GNOME might work for you. Personally, I think Fedora is a great option for gaming since it allows choosing from multiple desktop environments. KDE Plasma is my go-to for gaming right now!
I had a tough time with Fedora 42 and KDE while installing NVIDIA drivers. I think secure boot was my issue! I couldn't figure out how to sign the drivers, so I gave up and switched to Mint. It's worth another shot, especially if you get the drivers sorted out!
