Why Did My Friend’s GPU Disappear After Playing Cyberpunk 2077?

So my buddy got into Cyberpunk 2077 and after a week of intense gameplay, his GPU seems to have vanished from his system entirely, including Task Manager. He experienced something like a GPU crash which reminded me of my old PC issues due to overheating—I solved mine by just cooling the room and opening my case. I suggested he do the same and maybe even reinstall the GPU drivers. After the reinstall, he sent me a screenshot that showed Windows couldn't find his graphics card. Oddly enough, the integrated graphics from his CPU weren't showing up in Task Manager either. He's now testing if the PCIe slot is the problem, but hasn't tried that yet. I'm worried that either the GPU is fried, but that doesn't explain the CPU graphics disappearing, or maybe the motherboard has issues. I plan to swap in my old GPU to test that. How can we figure out if the motherboard's at fault or what else could be going wrong? His PC specs include an MSI B550-A-PRO motherboard, Sapphire Pulse AMD RX6700 XT GPU, and a Ryzen 7 CPU, among other things, and I suspect the original issue could be an underpowered setup for Cyberpunk.

If the GPU's truly broken, it likely wouldn't transmit any signal. It’s important to double-check that it's correctly seated in its slot since a loose connection could cause it to not appear in Device Manager. A quick clean install of the drivers using DDU could help too! But if the motherboard were faulty, you'd probably see bigger issues like the whole PC failing to post—they usually give you some kind of power response. If you haven’t, try replugging your monitor into the motherboard's video outputs to see if anything shows up there.

1. The GPU does seem to output a signal because the taskbar turns black instead of the usual gray, which I'm familiar with from previous GPU issues.

2. The GPU was firmly installed and was functioning perfectly fine until this glitch happened without any changes made before.

3. I admit I’m not the best with understanding motherboard functionality—hence my concern!

4. Not sure how thorough his driver reinstall was, so I’ll suggest he do a clean one just to be safe.

5. Fair point! If I knew all the answers, I wouldn't be posting here!
