Struggling with Motivation After Being Laid Off – Need Some Advice

I got laid off on April 1st, and unfortunately, it wasn't an April Fools' joke. After taking a week to regroup, I dove into updating my resume and working on some personal projects. For a while, I was on fire—redesigned my portfolio and created a few cool apps like a crop planner for Stardew Valley and a backlog tracker for video games. But lately, I've hit a wall. I feel unmotivated to code and caught up in negative thoughts like 'why bother' and 'do I even know how to code well enough?' I know I'm decent at what I do, and it seems like this is more of a motivation issue than a skills issue. Any advice on how to reignite my passion for coding?

April 1st? Oof, that’s harsh! It sounds like you might need some fresh perspective. Isolation and overthinking can really bring you down. Maybe you should build something you're truly passionate about—whether it's a SaaS project or just something cool for your GitHub. It might help you get back in the swing of things. And don’t forget to step outside and recharge!

Yeah, that timing was the worst. I think I will take a step back and brainstorm some ideas. Maybe even focus on another hobby for a bit to clear my head.

Hey, I've been there! It happened to me last November, too. After moving to a new city, my employer let me go shortly after. I also revamped my portfolio and started new projects, but the constant rejection got to me. My advice is, if you're feeling burnt out, take a break but keep applying for jobs. Look for local opportunities; they may have fewer applicants. I found a job locally about six months later, and it does get better, so hang in there!

Thanks, I really appreciate it. It’s tough out there right now. I’ll take a few days to relax, play some games, and then get back into job searching. I live near Austin, so I’ll look into some smaller startups too.

No specific advice, but you’re definitely not alone. It took me seven months to land a short contract. The job market is brutal right now, so don’t be too hard on yourself.

It’s tough out there, and luck plays a big role these days. I started a contract gig after looking for a year and a half. Keep the faith—it's possible to land a job if you stay persistent, even when the market feels awful. I've got a self-taught background too, and it’s all about keeping at it!

I’m right there with you; I've got around three years of experience but self-taught with no degree. I'll keep pushing through and take some time to reset my mindset. I hope your contract stays solid too!
