I came home to find a note on my door from my internet provider saying they worked on my modem, but I hadn't experienced any issues. After contacting them, they said it was a mistake. However, I returned home to find my internet off and another note. They informed me they cut off my service because my modem posed issues that could affect my neighbors' internet. They mentioned I needed a replacement, but I couldn't pick one up myself, which was frustrating. I was shocked because I've never been late on bills and my modem is a whopping 13 years old! The technician even told me I should've replaced it a decade ago. My main concerns are: how does my modem affect my neighbors? And if it needed to be replaced after 3 years, why are they just telling me this now? Wouldn't a prior notice have been better than showing up unannounced?

Sounds like poor customer service to me. They really should have sent you a heads-up about the modem issue instead of just cutting you off. It's kind of ridiculous they waited this long to address it!
If your modem is 13 years old, it definitely needed replacing! Old modems can cause problems in a shared network since they don't work well with updated infrastructure. Your ISP might be waiting for everyone to upgrade so they can phase out the old tech. It's not just affecting you – it can impact everyone else on that same line.
Cable internet is a shared resource, so if your modem is acting up, it can interfere with service for others. Imagine the cable lines are like a highway but your old modem is a broken-down car – it holds everyone up. If your modem's outdated, it likely can't handle the current speeds or frequencies, which could disrupt service in your area. You might've missed notices about needing to upgrade, though ISPs usually send multiple reminders about such things.
Thanks for the insight! I did look for any notices but never saw any. I feel like they should’ve communicated better.
Yeah, I agree! It would have been much better for them to ask you to schedule an upgrade rather than just showing up.
