Should I Choose the 9800X3D or 9950X3D for Gaming and Video Editing?

Hey everyone! I'm currently rocking an Intel 12700K with a 3080 Ti, but I'm looking to switch to an AMD CPU that features 3D V-Cache to boost my gaming performance. I recently upgraded to a dual-mode OLED display (1080p 480Hz/4K 240Hz) and absolutely love it, but I've realized my GPU struggles with demanding single-player games at 4K, and my CPU isn't cutting it for high refresh rates at 1080p. I'm planning to upgrade everything eventually.

Normally, I'd just go for the 9800X3D, but having used Intel processors my whole life, I've heard mixed reviews about the base X3D chips' productivity performance. As a full-time video editor, I'm curious—will I notice a significant difference in editing and productivity between the 9800X3D and the 9950X3D? Since I'm coming from an Intel DDR4 setup, I'll also need a new motherboard and RAM, so I'd like to keep costs down unless it's really worth the extra investment. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Honestly, either CPU would be a solid upgrade for both gaming and productivity. But if you're looking at the 9950X3D, it's designed to excel in both areas and handles workloads better than just the 9800X3D.

That’s a good point! I’ve heard the 9950X3D really shines for productivity, especially with video editing.

One thing to consider is that if you're really wanting to hit those high frame rates in 4K, your GPU might need an upgrade too, like the 5080 or 5090 for serious performance boosts.

I know, right? I'd love a 5090, but the price is a bit much for me right now.

Both chips will serve you well, but if you're used to Intel and worried about productivity, the 9950X3D might be worth the investment. It's designed to handle heavy workloads while still gaming effectively.

Yeah, I’m definitely leaning towards the 9950 with how it balances both tasks.

If gaming is your priority, the 9800X3D is great and will easily outperform your Intel chip. But for a mix of gaming and high-end editing, the 9950X3D has that extra edge, especially with the additional cache.

Gotcha, so for games and heavy editing, the 9950X3D does seem like the better choice.
