Am I on the Right Track in My Cloud Career?

Hey everyone! I've been part of a graduate program for about a year now, and I've been working with the cloud team the whole time. I had the option to explore other technology teams, but I chose to stay because I'm really passionate about Azure and the team I work with.

Over this year, I've tackled a lot of responsibilities, like handling third-line support, juggling both traditional infrastructure and cloud tasks. I've solved some complicated networking problems and I'm among the few who know our firewall systems well enough to manage outages. I can script quite a bit—like automating monthly cost pulls and setting up dynamic groups in Exchange. I'm even capable of creating VM templates and optimizing specifications and costs for VMs in Azure. My skills in privileged identity management are solid, and I prefer infrastructure as code over the portal for launching resources. I track all my work meticulously and find ways to improve processes.

So after a year, I'm wondering: Am I at a decent level considering my experience in Azure? I sometimes doubt myself and fear I might have fallen behind. I absolutely love this field and want to build a solid career. Any tips on advancing or establishing myself as a cloud engineer would be greatly appreciated! My biggest concern is potentially ending up back on the service desk, which I really want to avoid.

If you understand both networking and cloud tech, you're definitely on the right path. Focus on real-world skills instead of just what looks good on paper. And don't stress too much about your CV just yet; gaining practical experience is what will pay off in the long run!

That’s great to hear! I'm in the UK, so I’ll keep that in mind moving forward.

You're doing awesome! It sounds like you have a strong foundation with cloud and networking skills. Remember, a lot of people just cycle through jobs for the money, but you're building valuable expertise by staying and growing in one area. Just keep pushing yourself to learn and take new challenges!

Thanks! I appreciate that. I guess I just worry sometimes—but I’m really passionate about the work.
