Is Switching to Arch Worth It for Gaming Performance?

I've been using Linux Mint Cinnamon and I've noticed that my friend, who switched to Arch using archinstall, has significantly better game performance. For example, I'm getting around 130 FPS in Roblox on OpenGL with some lag spikes, while my friend is able to maintain higher and more stable FPS on Vulkan, despite us having similar hardware setups. Mint has also crashed on me multiple times, and I'm just really frustrated with the performance issues. I want to make a switch to Arch, especially since Mint is becoming a hassle. I'm planning to use archinstall for a smoother installation, but I could use recommendations for a good desktop environment—I'm considering xfce4. Any advice on whether the switch is worth it and what I should keep in mind?

Switching to Arch could definitely help, especially since Mint is fixed-release and might be running outdated software. Arch's rolling release means you're always on the latest and greatest. Just make sure to compare kernel versions and drivers when you switch to avoid any hiccups.

If your main focus is gaming and you want something easy to use, you might also want to try a plug-and-play option like Pop!_OS. It's optimized for gaming and could save you the hassle of dealing with Arch, but if you're up for the challenge, Arch can be very rewarding!

There could be a few reasons your friend is getting better FPS. It might be down to hardware differences or settings they’ve optimized. Have you compared in-game settings? Sometimes, a small tweak can make a huge difference without needing to reinstall anything.

Check out some gaming-specific distros like Pika OS or Bazzite. They’re designed to provide better gaming performance out of the box. Arch is great, but it might take some time to get everything set up just how you like it.
