New to IT and Linux – Need Advice on Learning and Resources

I've just landed my first IT job about a month and a half ago. Prior to this, my experience was limited to what I learned in IT Technical High School and some home labbing on my own. Recently, I've started diving into our Apache server to resolve some ongoing outages, and now I'm getting more Linux-related tasks assigned to me. I'm eager to learn and think that specializing in Linux could really benefit my career, but I often feel out of my depth. I'm looking for guidance on what I should focus on. Are there must-read books or videos I should check out? How can I feel more confident and competent in my new responsibilities? Any tips on how to learn Linux administration effectively would be greatly appreciated!

First off, don't hesitate to tell your manager that you're new to Linux. It’s totally fair to ask for support instead of being thrown into the deep end without guidance. Document all the Linux-related tickets you handle, as they could help you later for promotions or raises.

Honestly, the resources available today are fantastic compared to when I started years ago. I’d recommend taking some structured courses like RHCSA on platforms like Udemy. Also, don’t forget to make use of chatbots for troubleshooting; they can help you quickly understand error messages and offer guidance.

For structured learning, CompTIA Linux+ was super helpful for me when I started supporting Linux at work. Just stay curious and proactive—understand why things work the way they do, instead of just memorizing solutions. This mindset will help you grow significantly in your role.

You’re in a great position to learn Linux! A good way to start is by setting up a home lab, like an old PC or a VM, and work on practical projects. It's crucial to get comfortable with the command line interface rather than the GUI, as that will be your main tool in administration. Having real project experience will boost your confidence and skills.

If you're looking for a challenge, try installing Gentoo from scratch on that old PC! It's tough but really rewarding.

Always remember to back up your configurations before making changes. For example, if you're modifying apache.conf, make a backup first with a command like `cp apache.conf apache.conf.bak`. It'll save you a headache if something goes wrong!

Great tip! Just make sure that your backup command is timestamped or includes the date, like `cp apache.conf apache.conf-$(date +%F).bak`, to keep track of versions.
