Need Guidance on Moving from Cybersecurity to Full-Stack Development

Hey everyone! I'm on a bit of a journey and could use some advice. I initially got interested in learning cybersecurity and looked into various courses and bootcamps like those on Coursera and HackerU. There was one company I found called Infinity Labs in Israel, where you can study cybersecurity for seven months and then work there. However, the challenge is that once you start learning, you can't work at the same time, which is tough. So I decided to change my direction and pursue full-stack development instead. I found a really great mentor through a friend who has become a senior full-stack engineer after studying with him. I'm excited to learn but I feel a bit stuck and unsure of what to do next. Any tips on how to navigate this situation?

Starting with full-stack development is actually a smart move if you're looking into cybersecurity. A lot of security professionals lack understanding of how applications function, which can limit their effectiveness. By learning to build applications first, you'll be much better equipped to secure them later. We've had students here at Metana do just that—they start with full-stack development, gain solid skills in creating apps, and then transition into security roles. It gives you an awesome edge, enabling you to communicate effectively with both developers and security teams.

Your mentor sounds like a great choice too. If your friend went from student to senior engineer, that's a testament to the mentor's capabilities. Focus on mastering the programming fundamentals first, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to add cybersecurity knowledge later. Plus, you'll be earning money while you learn, which is a major plus compared to those lengthy programs where you’re broke for months! The cybersecurity field isn’t going anywhere; in fact, it's in desperate need of programmers who understand security. So, definitely learn to build first and worry about breaking things later!

Hey, I totally get where you’re coming from. It can be overwhelming at first, but the fact that you're switching to full-stack development is a good call. Having a strong foundation in building applications will serve you well in cybersecurity. Just remember, it's okay to feel stuck sometimes—everyone does! When you're in that rut, try reaching out to your mentor for specific guidance or tackle small, manageable projects to build your confidence. You've got this!
