Help! I’m on Windows and a scary virus popup just took over my screen!

I just got a full-screen message claiming that there are 18 viruses on my PC, and I'm freaking out because I haven't downloaded much except for a few games from itch.io. I have no idea how to handle this and I can't afford to pay for antivirus software. I've never dealt with something like this before, and I'm really lost. Could anyone give me some advice?

Sounds like you're dealing with scareware, which is a common trick that tries to make you call a fake support number or install a shady antivirus. If you can, check your browser notifications and disable any that look suspicious. Don't panic, Windows has built-in antivirus capabilities that you can use for free.

I think that's what it was because I saw a notification pop up about installing an antivirus right after I closed the scary screen!
