Is This Call from Microsoft Support a Scam?

I recently bought a new PC and upgraded to Windows 11. I tried activating it using a retail key from my old PC, but it turns out I had the wrong key since my current Windows activation is digital. After struggling to activate it, I sought help through the Settings under Activation. I ended up getting a call from Microsoft support. The person on the other end requested my Windows key, but since my activation is digital, I could only provide the last 5 digits. He then asked for remote access to my PC using Quick Assist by giving me a code. I got uneasy at that point and stopped the process. Was this call legitimate or a scam? Should I wipe my drive to be safe, or did it not go far enough for my PC to be at risk?

Honestly, when you ask for help, you're going to get someone on the line. The likelihood of a scammer calling you out of the blue like that is low. But I understand your paranoia! It's smart to be cautious. Just remember, if they ask for too much control over your PC, that's a red flag.

If that was a legitimate Microsoft support tech, they would likely just need to manually activate your Windows. But be sure the key you purchased is from a reliable source to avoid future headaches. Glad to hear you found the full key and got it working!

It doesn't sound like a scam to me. I mean, you reached out for help, so it's likely just a normal support call. The fact that the person was Indian doesn’t indicate anything - there are many legit support teams based in India. Just be cautious with screen sharing and remote access in general; it’s always good to verify who you're talking to.
