I'm in search of a printer that can handle various tasks, specifically printing letters and color documents, as well as printing MICR checks. We've been using an Epson EcoTank, which has worked okay, but it sometimes leaves marks on envelopes and paper, and I'm hoping for something more reliable and faster. We print checks monthly from multiple bank accounts, and having lots of pre-printed check stock is getting cumbersome. Ideally, I need a printer that can handle envelopes and regular documents (mostly black but some color) and can print MICR checks. We often print over 800 pages at a time a few times a month. Is there a printer out there that can meet these needs for under $1,000?

For true MICR printing, you'll need a specific type of toner because it contains magnetized ink. You might want to consider getting a solid office printer for your general printing needs and a separate LaserJet just for MICR. For example, I supported a client with a LaserJet 4050 dedicated to MICR, and they found it reliable. As for using regular toner with a MICR font, it might work since most checks are image-based now, but there's always the chance a check might get rejected by some banks.

I really hope to avoid having two printers, though. If I have to, I will, but exploring this option first makes sense. Would I need to run the checks through the MICR printer to print the numbers and then use the other for everything else?
