Best M.2 Slot Arrangement for My NVMe Drives?

Asked By SoundWaveWizard99 On

I'm building a computer for music production and have three NVMe drives to install:
- 1 x Samsung 9100 Gen 5 for sound libraries in M.2_1 slot
- 1 x Samsung 900 PRO Gen 4 for OS and programs in M.2_3 slot
- 1 x Samsung 900 PRO Gen 4 for general files, media, and Ableton projects in M.2_4 slot.

Is this the best placement for optimal speed? I'm a bit confused about the lane sharing on the Asus ProArt X870E Creator-Wifi, so I want to make sure I set it up correctly.

Absolutely! Just go for it.

Honestly, you probably won't notice a big difference, but if you're looking to optimize, consider moving the OS and Programs drive to M.2_2. The PCIE16(G5)_2 slot shares bandwidth with M.2_2, but since you’re not using that PCIe slot, it shouldn’t matter too much.

Thanks for the advice! So if I do this:
- Samsung 9100 Gen 5 in M.2_1
- Samsung 900 PRO Gen 4 OS in M.2_2
- Samsung 900 PRO Gen 4 for projects in M.2_3

That should work well, right?

Just a heads up, M.2_2 does share bandwidth with both PCIE16_2 and PCIE16_1. Putting the OS drive there will drop the main PCIe x16 slot to x8.

However, for music production, this likely won't affect performance since the GPU is not handling heavy loads. Still, minor optimization can help in rare cases. Moving the Samsung 9100 to M.2_1 likely won't make a big difference for audio work due to the sizes of audio files.
