What’s the best cord for my external SSD that keeps disconnecting?

Hey everyone! I've been having some frustrating issues with my 2TB Crucial X8 external SSD. The cord I'm using keeps disconnecting, which has made it super annoying to use, especially since I primarily use it for gaming. Is the problem likely with the cord, or could it be a connection issue with my PC? If it's the cord, what's a good, affordable USB A to USB C option? And if not, how should I troubleshoot the connection?

If you're dealing with a loose connection, I’ve had some success by gently pinching the metal part of the USB-A connector. Just a slight adjustment can make for a tighter fit! But definitely keep an eye on whether your ports or the SSD's port might be the issue.

You might want to check out some cables from Cable Matters. Their USB 4 cable supports up to 80Gbps and is certified, so that could be a good option if you're looking for a reliable cord.

It's frustrating to troubleshoot, especially when everything else works fine. Since you mentioned using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable directly into your PC, that’s good. If the SSD disconnects but other devices don’t, you might want to contact Crucial support. There could be an issue with the SSD itself!

First thing you should try is switching to a different USB port on your computer. Sometimes, a specific port can have issues. If that doesn't help, trying a different cable is a must! Look for one that says USB 3.2 Gen 2; those usually have a blue tongue on the USB A end. Also, are you plugging it in directly, or is it going through a dock or splitter?
