Why is my internet speed so slow despite a high plan?

Hey everyone! I recently moved in and got a plan for 1 Gb/s for $70 a month, which I was super excited about. But the actual speeds I'm seeing are only around 20 Mb/s! I contacted my ISP, and they claim the modem is getting 1 Gb, but I'm just not seeing those speeds on my devices. I'm using an ISP modem with a Netgear AX1800 router connected via a Cat6 cable, and I also have an Asus USB AC53 for connectivity. My PC is fairly good with an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, a GTX 1070, and 8GB of RAM, running Windows 10. I'm really frustrated because I believe I should be hitting speeds closer to 600 Mb/s. Any advice on what could be going wrong?

Have you checked for any firmware updates on your router? It’s also a good idea to make sure your network drivers on your PC are up-to-date. Sometimes that can really impact your connection quality.

I’ve checked for driver updates often since I noticed the issue and everything seems fine.

How are you measuring your speed? And what’s the write speed of your disk? Just keep in mind that 1 Gb/s is a lot for an average home. You might not need all of it, but if web pages are taking too long to load, check if your modem is in bridge mode since you’re using your own router. It can also help to set static DNS like Cloudflare or Google instead of the built-in ISP DNS. Also, if you're using a VPN or any third-party security apps, those can really slow down your connection too.

I have no idea about write speed, I'm just using the speed test from Google.

First off, try disconnecting your router and connect directly to the modem for a speed test. This way, you can see if the router might be causing some slowdown. If you don't have a long enough cable, you could look into getting one, but it's a good first step to check.

I can't find a long cable and they said the modem is getting 1 Gb, so it should be fine, right?
