Which CPU Should I Choose: Ryzen 7 9700X or Ryzen 7 7800X3D for Gaming and Editing?

I'm torn between getting the Ryzen 7 9700X and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. I primarily game (about 80% of the time) but also do some editing in Premiere Pro and Photoshop (around 20%). The prices for both are pretty similar in my country. Which one should I go for?

Honestly, it depends on your GPU too. If you're using something like a 7700XT, the 7800X3D will probably make better use of it, especially if you're gaming at 1080p. The 9700X is solid, but the 7800X3D is just a bit faster in games. If you were on a lower-end GPU, like a 5060Ti, I'd suggest downgrading your CPU instead to save some cash for a better GPU upgrade.

Right now, I've got an RX 7700XT and I mostly game at 1080p too. Sounds like the 7800X3D might be the better choice then!

Before switching to the 9950X3D, I had the 9700X. It was a solid performer, especially when overclocked. I got some great clock speeds out of it. If you're comfortable with tuning, it might still be worth considering simply for that flexibility.

Did you notice a huge improvement moving from the 9700X to the 9950X3D?

For gaming, I'd definitely suggest the 7800X3D. I have the 9900X3D, and it holds up great for both my gaming sessions and light work. The newer architecture in the 7800X3D should give you an edge too!

That's good to know! Do your work tasks still run smoothly on the X3D?

I'd go with the 7800X3D. It's generally better for gaming, and even though the 9700X isn't a slouch, it doesn't offer a huge advantage in most applications. The 7800X3D just gives you more bang for your buck when it comes to gaming performance!

That's true, but I noticed that the 9700X performs quite well in Photoshop tasks. It's about 16% faster. It's a tough call depending on what you prioritize!

Yeah, but gaming could be a bigger concern for him since it's 80% of his use. 7800X3D seems like a safer bet.
