I'm looking for recommendations for a stable and easy-to-use Linux distribution to revive an old PC. I want something that requires minimal maintenance and is lightweight without unnecessary bloatware. Ideally, it should have Debian-level stability, but I'd like to have control over the initial installation options. Any suggestions?

For older hardware, I'd suggest MX Linux or Sparky Linux. Both of these offer good performance and have minimal system requirements, which might suit your needs perfectly!
Consider LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition). It's lightweight and easy to use. While it does require some maintenance, it's one of the most straightforward distros I've encountered. Just a thought—if maintenance is a big issue, a Chromebook might be a better fit for your family member. They’re super user-friendly and don’t require much upkeep!
If you're after that Debian stability, why not just go straight for Debian? You can do a minimal install by not selecting the recommended packages during setup, which will keep things nice and lean. You can also test it out using a Live USB before committing. Perfect for a no-fuss setup!
+1 for Debian! You can grab the latest version from their website and pick a desktop environment you prefer. Testing it with a Live USB is a great way to go!
