Can My Old i5 8600K and GTX 1080 Still Handle Gaming Today?

I'm in the process of building a PC for my nephew on a budget, and I've got an older i5 8600K paired with a GTX 1080. I'm curious if this setup can still deliver decent performance for gaming at 1080p and at least 60fps. He's primarily interested in playing games like GTA V, FiveM, Fortnite, and Call of Duty. I know this setup is limited to PCIe Gen 3 and doesn't support DLSS or frame generation, but is it still sufficient for the games he wants to play?

You'll likely be fine! I had a GTX 1070 Ti with an older CPU and ran recent titles like Cyberpunk and Baldur's Gate 3 without major issues. You might need to tweak settings here and there, but it should work. Just keep in mind some newer games may require more from your hardware.

This combo should work, but you may need to lower settings a bit for some titles to hit that 60fps mark. If you don’t already have a motherboard and RAM, consider if it's worth upgrading to a whole new budget build instead. Microcenter has some sweet deals if you're near one!

Fortnite and Call of Duty will play on lower settings, but GTA V should run great at 1080p. Just be prepared to adjust graphics settings depending on the game.

The GTX 1080 is still quite capable! While it does show its age a bit, it should handle those games without a hitch. The i5 8600K is still a decent CPU, so together they should perform well for 1080p gaming.

For 1080p, it should be good! Keeping a steady 60 FPS might require some settings adjustments depending on the game, so make sure he knows that options like 'Ultra' and 'SSAA' aren’t his only choices.
