Hey everyone! I'm a first-year software engineering student and recently took on a freelance project for free to add to my portfolio. I created a complete layout and even planned to build it using React, Tailwind, and Next.js over the weekend. I was super excited and worked on updating their logo and content too. However, I later discovered that this client isn't legitimate, and I definitely don't want to assist in scamming others.
So far, they haven't received any of my work, and I still hold all the rights to it. However, they did connect with me on GitHub, and they know who I am. I'm thinking about reusing the design for a more genuine project, but I'm not sure about the best course of action. Should I be reporting them? What would you do in my shoes? Any insights or advice would be much appreciated!

Did you sign a contract or receive any payment? Make sure you're not liable for anything they do. Just avoid linking yourself to them as a client in your portfolio, and don't let them associate you with their work!
Why not send them the work you've completed but pack it full of malware? Just kidding! In all seriousness, definitely make sure you've secured everything on your end and consider reporting them if you feel it's necessary.
First, if they have access to your GitHub, they likely have your files already, so that needs to be addressed right away. Don’t give access to your personal accounts! Create separate accounts for clients instead. Also, document everything; if you feel threatened, report them immediately.
This is exactly why I stopped freelancing! It’s so tough to sift through so many scammers before you find a legit client. I recommend always requiring a non-refundable deposit before you start any work—it's a good way to protect yourself.
I'm really sorry to hear about your experience! If you have evidence of their illegal activities, you might want to consider reporting it to the authorities. But make sure you’re protecting yourself and your information first. I've had my fair share of scams, and honestly, it's best not to seek revenge or get involved in anything risky.
