I just did a full reinstallation of Windows on my old laptop and now it's incredibly slow. Even simple tasks like typing take 5-10 seconds to respond. I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue or something with the software. What should I look into first to figure out what's causing this problem?

Your laptop might be busy downloading and installing updates or running a full scan with Defender. Just let it run for a day and see if things improve by tomorrow.
When you say you did a reset, what exactly do you mean? Did you reinstall Windows entirely and wipe everything?
This seems odd. You should check your task manager to see if there’s something hogging your CPU. If that doesn’t show anything, consider resetting from a USB image using the Media Creation Tool.
I’m on Windows 10 and I'm looking into the task manager now.
Yes, I did a full reinstallation and removed all files.
