What PC parts should I prioritize when building on a tight budget?

I'm looking to build a new PC for my son since my old Dell is not upgrade-friendly. The plan is to buy components gradually as I can afford them over time, but I'm uncertain which part to get first. I was considering starting with the motherboard as it's essential for the overall build. Any tips or advice on how to approach this?

I recommend waiting until you have enough saved to buy the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and GPU together. Buying in bits could leave you with parts that don’t work together because of compatibility issues. If you buy parts that just end up sitting, and one’s defective, it could end up costing you more headaches.

Exactly! A lot of times, people forget that upgrades interact with each other. If your old Dell uses proprietary parts, you’ll find it tricky to upgrade just one thing without needing to swap multiple parts later.

Don't forget, if you want to buy some parts separately, you can upgrade storage like an SSD incrementally. You won’t need to worry too much about it becoming outdated as far as performance goes. Just be careful not to rush into purchasing complex parts like the GPU and motherboard until you've got everything else lined up.

It's usually better to save up and buy all your parts at once. If you buy something piece by piece, you risk having it sit for months, and if it turns out defective, returning it could be a hassle after the return window closes. Plus, if you're worried about spending money too quickly, just save everything until you can buy what you need all at once. Trust me, it will save you a lot of trouble later.

Totally agree! Also, if you buy everything at once, you maximize the warranty period for all parts. If you must buy over time, maybe start with something like the case and power supply, which won't become outdated.

If you're on a tight schedule, consider sticking with your old system just a bit longer while you save. In the meantime, you could look for sales, especially at places that bundle deals. It can be hard to find parts on a budget if bought separately, but combo deals can really help cut costs.
