Is Gaming on Linux Worth It?

I'm thinking about making the switch to Linux for gaming, particularly because I enjoy survival games like Minecraft, Valheim, and The Forest. However, I'm also a fan of titles that include anti-cheat systems, such as Dead by Daylight, Elden Ring, and PUBG, and I'm curious if they all run well on Linux. Additionally, I'm considering moving from Windows to either Linux Mint or Pop!_OS. Any recommendations or experiences you can share?

It's really hit or miss with games. Best to check those links, especially for anti-cheat concerns. I've heard PUBG can be tricky due to that whole system. As for the distros, Pop!_OS seems to outperform Mint, particularly for Nvidia users, due to newer drivers and better graphics management.

For someone just starting out with Linux, Bazzite seems like a solid choice! What's great is that you’re not stuck with just one distro; many people enjoy hopping around to find what works best for them.

Before diving in, definitely check your games' compatibility! For Steam games, ProtonDB.com is super helpful—the gold and platinum ratings usually mean a smooth experience. Also, check out AreWeAntiCheatYet.com to see how multiplayer games fare with anti-cheat systems. I think PUBG might be a real struggle, but Dead by Daylight seems to work just fine. If you're worried, you could even add a second SSD. This way, you can experiment with Linux without losing your Windows setup. As for distros, while Mint is user-friendly, it may lag behind in software versions, which can be a downside for gaming. I would lean towards a distro like Bazzite or something with KDE for better support and updated systems.

Totally agree! I've been using Fedora with KDE Plasma and it was such a breeze to set up, everything just worked without a hitch.

I've been on Ubuntu Cinnamon for about nine months now, the gaming experience has been mostly smooth. There are times when you might need to tweak things a bit, but the ProtonDB is quite useful for info.

First things first, check compatibility at ProtonDB and DistroChooser. If your games require kernel-level anti-cheat, it can get a bit tricky, but with some effort, Linux can be a great platform. Just remember it's a learning curve, not an obstacle!

If you’re unsure about compatibility, sticking with Windows might be the better option for now. You don’t want to jump into Linux and face a ton of issues right off the bat! Sometimes it's easier to keep things simple.
