I recently purchased a new 1440p monitor that supports a refresh rate of up to 180Hz. The game I play most frequently usually runs anywhere from 160 to 190 frames per second, depending on the action happening on-screen. Given this, I'm uncertain whether I should keep my monitor set to 180Hz even if my frame rate doesn't consistently hit 180fps, or if I should just stick to 144Hz since my game never dips below 144fps.

For sure! When using variable refresh rate technology, it will adjust your display to match your fps anyway, making it a seamless experience.
Definitely turn on variable refresh rate if your monitor supports it. If you can’t, just leave it at 180Hz. You might get some tearing with lower fps, but G-Sync or FreeSync can help alleviate that.
Higher refresh rates tend to provide a better visual experience, especially if G-Sync or FreeSync is active. It doesn't hurt to have it at 180Hz, as the tech is optimized for native rates. You might as well give it a shot!
It's really about what feels best for you. You might want to keep it at 180Hz and use variable refresh rate (VRR) for a smoother experience. Everyone has different preferences, so go with what feels right!
Honestly, if your monitor has G-Sync or FreeSync, you can just leave it at 180Hz without worrying too much about frame drops. The adaptive sync should handle it well. Just set it to 180Hz and enjoy!
Uncapping your fps is generally fine! If you don’t notice a difference between 180 and 144 fps, feel free to cap it for better power savings. Personally, I played at lower fps and didn’t see a significant drop in experience, so it can vary from game to game!
If you cap your fps at 144, that’s likely the max it’ll hit, which could leave you averaging around 120 fps during gameplay. Keeping your monitor at 180Hz allows for the highest frame display, which could be beneficial.
It does have G-Sync. Thanks for clearing that up!
