Where Should I Begin Upgrading My Old PC?

Hey everyone,

I haven't worked on my PC in a while, mainly because I had to replace the motherboard and CPU last year with some leftover parts from a local shop. Since then, I switched mostly to console gaming, but I'd really like to get back into PC gaming, especially since most of my friends still play on PC. I'm not aiming for top-tier performance; I'd just like to run most games on medium settings at 30fps or higher. Right now, I can barely manage 1fps on the lowest settings, and I've noticed my CPU is constantly running at about 99% usage.

My friends enjoy playing newer games or those released a year or two ago, like Helldivers, Darktide, and Baldur's Gate 3. I'm also interested in getting the new Oblivion Remaster on PC.

Here are my current specs:
- CPU: AMD FX-4100 (Zambezi 32nm Technology)
- RAM: 24GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz
- Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 (Socket M2)
- Graphics: 8192MB ATI Radeon RX 580 Series

I realize the CPU definitely needs an upgrade, but do I also need a new motherboard? How do you think my GPU would hold up? I feel a bit lost with all the newest components and upgrades available. Any guidance would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Honestly, you might need a whole new system to hit your gaming goals, especially if you're eyeing Oblivion Remastered. The parts you've got are pretty outdated, and the cost to upgrade would likely be close to building something new. Just being real with you here!

Yeah, it sounds like you're not alone in thinking that. It'd be nice if a simple CPU swap could give you a boost, but it seems like a full rebuild might be the way to go.
