Help! I Lost My Notes After Turning on iCloud Sync

I recently enabled iCloud syncing to share my notes, but after doing so, all my notes that were stored only on my phone disappeared. They were replaced by notes that were already in iCloud. I tried turning off iCloud sync hoping that would fix the issue, but now I have zero notes left. A restart didn't help either. The last note I can find is from 2021, and I lost everything created after that. Is there a way to recover them?

Just curious, what folder were your notes stored in originally? If it wasn't in iCloud, was it in "On My iPhone" or maybe linked to another account like Gmail or Yahoo?

I think they were stored on my iPhone.

You might want to check the Notes app by tapping on ‘Folders’ in the top-left corner. Look if there’s a list for ‘On My iPhone’ alongside the iCloud section. If you see it but it’s empty, that's rough.

Did you get a chance to merge your notes before this happened? If you didn't, restoring from an old iCloud backup might be your best shot at getting those lost notes back.

It's a bummer that they disappeared like that. If you're sure you had them on your phone, pursuing a backup restoration may be your best option. I hope you can recover them!
