Can I replace my 14th Gen Intel CPU with a 12th Gen one without issues?

I've been using a 14900k for almost 2 years, but unfortunately, I've dealt with degradation twice. The first chip lasted about 8 months before it started experiencing problems, and Intel exchanged it for me. Now, I've been using the second one for a little over a year, and after all the microcode updates and limits, it's showing the same issues – crashes in games, failed file extracts, BSODs, etc. Since it's still under warranty, I'm thinking of switching to a 12900k instead of the expensive AMD options. My main question is: can I just swap my 14900k for the 12900k, or do I need to clean-install Windows? Also, does the Z790 motherboard support 12th Gen CPUs? Thanks for any insights!

Yep, just swap them out! No need to reinstall Windows, it should work fine.

Awesome, that’s what I was hoping to hear!

Honestly, you could just get that 14900k replaced under warranty, sell it, and then put the money towards a 12th Gen or AMD setup. It's a decent route if you're looking to ditch Intel for more reliability.

That’s a smart move, plus some people do find Intel actually offers refunds instead of replacements.

That’s true! I've been running my 14900k for about 18 months, and I’m amazed it hasn’t failed yet.

Remember, switching to the 12th Gen is technically a downgrade. They fixed several issues over time, so if you are still within warranty, just try the replacement again and see if it holds up.

If you replace that 14th Gen CPU, consider selling it on eBay, then grab a 12900k. It’s a good interim solution until you’re ready for AMD.

Swapping to a 12th Gen should work perfectly fine with your Z790 motherboard, just check for a BIOS update to be safe.

You can definitely install the 12th Gen without any problems. Just a straight swap, really, no other steps required.
