I'm curious about using a 6-pin and an 8-pin power connection for my GPU. If I take a 6+2 cable but only plug in the 6-pin, and then use the +2 from a completely separate cable, will anything go wrong? Just asking for a friend... okay, fine, it's actually me!

Mixing cables like that typically won't cause any issues with a single rail PSU since the load gets split across two sets of cables. So, as long as your PSU can handle it, you're likely fine. Just make sure the total wattage is okay for your GPU!
But what if I'm using a multi-rail PSU? Wouldn't that change things more?
