I've recently switched to an open-air case (xtia xproto-atx) for my PC. I have two HDDs that I use for storing video files and caching. In my previous regular case, I didn't realize how warm these drives could get—especially when I'm editing videos. I can't check the exact temperatures, but they definitely feel quite toasty while in use.
Now that I'm in an open-air setup, I'm curious if I should get a fan to help cool down the HDDs. My case doesn't offer a way to mount a fan directly for that purpose, so right now, the HDDs are receiving no active cooling. They're just sitting in stagnant air. I was considering using an HDD cage and attaching a fan to it as a cooling solution, even though it may not look great. What do you all think? Given that it's an open-air setup, is it okay for my HDDs to run without any cooling, or should I find a way to actively cool them?

You don’t really need a fan for your HDDs in an open-air case. They’re probably getting more airflow compared to drives in a typical case, which is a good thing!
Consider using something like CrystalDiskInfo to monitor your drive temperatures. Generally, if the HDDs stay under 60°C, they should be fine, but it’s important to check the max operating temperature for your specific drives. Stay informed!
Thanks for the tip on CrystalDiskInfo! I wasn't sure how to check the temperatures, so I really appreciate it!
