Is my PC freezing due to a CMOS battery issue?

I'm having some trouble with my PC that I think might be related to the CMOS battery. My motherboard is a B450M Steel Legend, and usually, my PC goes through the POST process twice before finally booting into Windows. However, today it just shows a black screen after the second POST. I've also noticed that the date and time aren't syncing correctly, plus my PC occasionally freezes and restarts on its own. After forcing a restart, I get messages saying it can't start the audio service or load GPU drivers. Also, my RAM speed changed from 3200 to 2400. Could the CMOS battery be the main issue here?

While the CMOS battery mainly keeps the date and BIOS settings, it's probably worth changing it out just in case. That double POST issue indicates some hardware could be failing, like the CPU or RAM. Are you stuck on a black screen, or can you still boot into Windows?

Replacing the CMOS battery could be a good first step, especially since CR2032 batteries are cheap and easy to find. It might resolve some of the issues you're facing with the date and time not syncing!

It’s probably worth changing the battery first. After that, check if the fans are working. You could also try running with one memory module at a time to see if that stabilizes things.

I'd need more details about your build to help further. Can you share the full specs? It might give a clearer picture of what's going on.

Sure! My setup includes a Ryzen 3600, 2x8 Kingston Fury RAM, an RX570 GPU, and a Corsair CX550M PSU.

The syncing issue does suggest a CMOS problem. But the freezing and restarts could be caused by other factors. Consider updating your BIOS as well; it might help improve stability before you reset XMP settings.
