I'm considering a transition from a support role into DevOps but I'm concerned about the common expectation of rotational shifts and being on-call in many of these positions in India. I'm looking for a realistic assessment: is it possible to carve out a DevOps career here without having to deal with these shifts? Specifically, what types of companies or roles should I aim for while I'm building my skills in DevOps? I've got three years of experience in support and am really hoping to move away from the night shifts and on-call duties that seem prevalent in the field.

From my 13 years in the field, I haven’t had to deal with rotational shifts or on-calls in my DevOps roles. It seems like some employers might be calling a support engineer role a DevOps role, which could be misleading. If you're clear about your job search, you can find positions that don't require those shifts. Hope that gives you a little hope!

Thanks for the reply! It's great to hear your experience. Just out of curiosity, are you currently working from India? What tools do you use in your role, and what does a typical day look like for you? Also, how can I spot genuine DevOps roles versus disguises in job descriptions?
