Looking to Upgrade My PC for Sim Racing and VR – Where Should I Start?

Hey everyone! I have a PC that's about three years old, and I'm looking to make some upgrades so it can better handle sim racing and VR experiences. Right now, I have a Ryzen 5 5600 CPU, an RX 6700 GPU, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM on a B550 Gaming Gen 3 motherboard. I'm thinking about bumping up the RAM but I'm not sure if I should go for 32GB or 64GB, especially since I plan to use this setup for future builds as well. I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions! Thanks!

Honestly, 32GB of RAM should be more than enough for gaming, including sim racing and VR. Your CPU is a bit outdated since it uses DDR4, and if you're planning a future build, consider going for DDR5 eventually. But right now, 32GB is a solid choice. Just be aware that you might need to change your motherboard if you switch to DDR5 later on.

Is switching to DDR5 really necessary right away? Upgrading everything at once can get super pricey!

If you want to enhance performance now, consider upgrading your GPU and adding more RAM. Particularly for VR, DCS is quite memory-hungry, and I noticed a big improvement when I added 32GB to my setup. It made my old PC run much smoother while I saved up for a complete upgrade.

That’s helpful! Just curious, which GPU would you recommend getting right now? I’m also leaning towards 32GB of RAM. Is there a noticeable difference between DDR4 and DDR5?

Does your current setup not work for sim racing and VR? If it’s running games like DCS well in 1440p, you might be okay, but performance can vary in VR.

I haven’t tried it in VR yet. DCS seems to work well at high settings, but I've heard VR can be a different beast.
