I wanted to get back into PC gaming but I have a custom rig from about a decade ago, and I'm not sure if anything in it can be reused. My specs include an Intel Core i7-4820K CPU, an AMD Radeon R9 200 GPU, an ASUS P9X79 motherboard, 32GB of DDR3 RAM, a 120GB Samsung SSD, and a couple of 1TB Western Digital HDDs. I've got a Corsair CS750M power supply, a liquid cooling system from Corsair, and my case is an NZXT H630. I'd love to know if there's anything salvageable or if it's better to just build a new PC. I also wonder if I can reuse the case and the power supply, considering the connections and mounts. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

I’d say you can keep the case, but most other parts should be replaced. Your CPU and GPU are aging and won't handle modern games well. Also, keep in mind that modern setups benefit from better airflow and cable management which older cases often lack. The SSD is pretty small too, it’s likely time to upgrade that as well for more space.
Yeah, and you can always add a front-panel adapter to get those newer ports.
I did something similar a while back, upgraded my old system and kept it for retro gaming. Still runs fine for older titles! But yeah, if you want to play the latest games, a full upgrade is advisable. I've had good luck with using my old case for new builds though—better cooling makes a huge difference.
Sounds like a fun idea! Retro games are so much fun.
And if you’re not gaming too hard, an upgrade could work fine!
You could salvage the case and the Blu-ray drive, but everything else is due for replacement. Those 10-year-old HDDs could be a ticking time bomb, and your PSU is likely on borrowed time too. Plus, your opt-in drives are becoming less relevant in modern builds. If you’re really into gaming, it's wiser to start fresh with components tailored to your needs. Your current setup would struggle with newer games and could hold you back significantly.
Thanks for the heads up! I didn't realize HDDs could fail so easily after ten years.
Definitely! Better to be safe than sorry with aging components.
Honestly, if you're not super attached to that case, starting fresh is probably your best bet. Most of your components are quite outdated. That said, your HDDs could still be usable, they typically last a long time, so they might be worth keeping. I’d look into getting a new NVMe M.2 SSD for better boot speeds. Your PSU should really be replaced since it’s quite old, you don't want it failing on you. The i7-4820K and R9 200 just won't keep up with modern gaming anymore, so I'd consider a complete build from scratch. Think about what you want from your PC; if you want to game at a decent level, a new build is likely the way to go.
Totally agree with you! I kept my old HDDs too, and they’ve been solid for me. Upgrading components in such an old build is just asking for compatibility issues.
Thanks for the advice! Looks like I might be in for a whole new rig.

Good point about the case! Plus, if I get a new one, it'll be easier to find features like USB-C.
