How can my friend get better internet from a neighbor across the street?

My friend recently moved into a new place and is facing a frustrating issue with his internet connection. The moment he gets home, his phone's internet slows down to a crawl, leaving him reliant on his cellular data. Luckily, his friendly neighbor across the street has offered to let him use their Wi-Fi, but there's a problem: his house is about 40 to 50 meters away!

The ISP situation in his area isn't great, and the staff at the nearest provider are less than helpful. Since he can't afford a monthly subscription for a better internet service, he's hoping to find a solution that will allow him to connect to the neighbor's Wi-Fi.

He's looking for devices that he could buy just once to help bridge this distance and access the Wi-Fi signal. Are there effective options out there for establishing a connection like this?

If you have a clear line of sight between the two houses, you should be in luck! I recommend looking into MikroTik or Ubiquiti equipment. I've been using them for years and they work really well for these types of situations. As long as you can aim them directly at the neighbor's house, you should get a solid connection!

Thanks for the tip! He actually does have a direct view from a pantry-like room with a window. Any specific products you’d suggest?

I might not know everything about this, but here’s an idea: get a Wi-Fi repeater and a directional antenna. You set the repeater to bridge mode to extend the neighbor's Wi-Fi inside. There are basic models that plug into outlets, but you could also find ones that allow you to attach an external antenna for better range! Just keep in mind that if the signal is weak coming in, it might not work out as expected.

If you have LOS, you can explore many P2P setups that consist of aligned antennas. They can go a long way in ensuring good speed and connectivity between the two homes. Make sure to check the products that have good reviews for the distance mentioned.

Definitely look for a point-to-point wireless bridge. It’s like creating a wireless Ethernet link between the two houses! Your friend can install a Wireless Access Point at his place for Wi-Fi, while the neighbor just needs to connect the antenna to their router. They typically come in pairs and can be found for under $100. Given that 50 meters is a short distance for these, it should work fine as long as they have a clear line of sight!

For line of sight, check out some P2P Wi-Fi access extenders. They usually come as a pair of antennas pointed at each other. I know someone who set this up for a client on a small island 10km away from internet access and it was super effective! Ubiquiti Nanobeam units could be a great option as they can reach high speeds and handle long distances well, even more so than most ISPs offer!
