I'm on the hunt for IT jobs that involve working on a boat or an offshore rig. If anyone has experience in this area, I'd love to hear how you found your position! The ocean has always called to me, and I'm craving a change. Vacations at the beach just aren't cutting it anymore, and I don't want to give up my established career just to chase this dream.

If you’re serious about this, have you considered the Navy? They often have IT roles that might float your boat, literally!

Or how about working on cruise ships? That's another option!

I worked on land rigs in the Arctic, so I'm not entirely offshore, but the pay was solid. Just know that the work-life balance isn't great. It's fun in your 20s, but I can't imagine doing it in my 30s!

I spent my twenties looking for excitement, so this sounds perfect for me in my thirties, haha!

A great first step is to start googling offshore drilling companies. Check their websites and look at the careers section—many post their job openings there.

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into that.

The experience really depends on the size of the boat. Large vessels can be comfortable, but something like a Coast Guard Cutter feels cramped. Also, being short and slim helps a lot when dealing with server racks and equipment installation since there's often not much room to maneuver. Ship life can be good, but you'll need to get used to the tight quarters!
