I'm currently running a dual boot setup with Windows and Linux Mint on my laptop, which features a hybrid GPU setup (integrated CPU graphics and an NVIDIA 3050M GPU). I've heavily modified Linux Mint but realized I was just following tutorials without truly learning the system, so I'm looking for a fresh start. As a software developer and machine learning engineer, I primarily use Linux for development rather than gaming, which I intend to keep on Windows. I'm considering switching to either Pop!_OS or Fedora but have a few questions: How do their resource usages compare, especially regarding battery life with tools like TLP? What's the process for removing Linux Mint and installing Pop!_OS or Fedora? I've read that Pop!_OS is based on version 22.04 and it's suggested to wait for 24.04—how significant is that? Is it easy to upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04 when it's released? Also, I've heard that Fedora can easily install drivers and has a newer kernel; will it handle automatic GPU switching, or will I need to run commands every time to toggle between GPUs? Lastly, do I need to adjust the bootloader when I install either of these over Mint?

Honestly, I would go with Fedora. It’s modern and keeps things up to date. Pop!_OS is good, but its NVIDIA support isn’t the best considering it’s based on 22.04. Upgrading is typically easier with Fedora since it’s more straightforward regarding package management. I know some find Arch appealing, but it’s a big time commitment to get set up properly. Definitely consider Fedora for a smoother user experience!
I’d definitely say go for Fedora! It’s actively developed and pretty much on the cutting edge, especially with Red Hat working on new kernels and drivers. Battery usage is similar across both distros to some extent, but you won't see drastic improvements unless you really tweak settings.
To replace Mint, boot into the live USB of Fedora, delete the Mint partitions using a partition manager, and allocate that space for Fedora. Just remember to check the GRUB settings so it recognizes Windows!
As for Pop!_OS, they are focusing more on their new Cosmic DE, which kind of puts the original OS on the back burner. Upgrading to 24.04 from 22.04 should be straightforward when it's available.
Regarding GPU switching: with Fedora, you might have to use commands to switch between the GPUs instead of it being automatic, unlike Pop!_OS which handles that for you. Lastly, the bootloader from your latest installation will take over, so it should work without issues after you erase Mint.
Thanks for the detailed info! That clears up a lot for me.
I recommend checking out something like Fedora's Cosmic Desktop spin. It’s like the best of both worlds, incorporating features from Pop!_OS with Fedora’s base. There are definitely ways to run more than one desktop environment on Fedora, which could give you some flexibility! Also, don’t worry too much about making installations yourself; you'll pick it up as you go. Just ensure you understand the commands before executing them—learning is part of the process!
That sounds like a great option! I wasn’t aware of that spin, so I’ll look into it.

I hear you on the Arch thing! I’m not ready for that kind of commitment yet.
