I'm trying to help my dad with his iPad running iOS 12.5.7. He usually uses it to FaceTime with his grandkids, and it has always worked fine. Recently, he encountered a problem where he can't use FaceTime anymore. Although he's still logged in and can send messages, every time he tries to FaceTime, it prompts him to update. The message indicates that the device is too old to update Messenger, even though Messenger functions properly aside from FaceTime. I've checked and it says the iPad is already up to date. Is there any way to resolve this issue?

It sounds like there's some confusion about Messenger and FaceTime. If you specifically meant video calls on Messenger, then that service might not work properly on older devices since compatibility can vary. If FaceTime is what you wanted, try using that instead; just make sure the grandkids also have iOS devices to call him. If updates show that his iPad is current, it might be a compatibility issue with Messenger.
Just a heads up, FaceTime and Messenger are actually different services. FaceTime is from Apple, while Messenger is from Facebook. They may have already stopped supporting older iOS versions for Messenger, which was last updated in 2018. You should check if you can update the iPad beyond iOS 12—ideally to at least iOS 15.1—otherwise, you might be stuck. Can the grandkids use iOS devices to FaceTime instead?
