Is It Too Late to Start Learning Software Development Without a Degree?

Hey everyone! I'm in my 40s and living in Wales, UK. I have a neurological condition that impacts me both physically and mentally, which makes working challenging right now. I really want to get back into a job, ideally something home-based that doesn't involve phone or customer interactions. I studied at university over 20 years ago but didn't succeed due to personal issues, and now I can't get a student loan for further studies.

I've decided to dive into software development since I'm not artistic enough for web design. I've started learning with FreeCodeCamp, beginning with web design to get my feet wet, but I'm considering focusing more on back-end development as I go. However, I'm concerned that most jobs require a degree, and I've seen boot camps costing thousands that I just can't afford. I'm curious, do you think it's worth pursuing free resources like FreeCodeCamp if a degree seems necessary for employment?

Don't pay for those overpriced boot camps! If you can build a couple of solid projects that showcase your skills, many employers will overlook the need for a degree. It’s all about proving what you can do!

Absolutely! It really is a lot for a boot camp when a year at university costs around £9000. Seems like they skim through the material anyway.

Seriously, avoid those prices! And don’t worry if design isn’t your strong suit; that’s what designers are for! You just need to code based on their designs. Check out The Odin Project—it’s free and has a really active community. They help you with everything from the basics to more advanced topics, with a lot of support on Discord.

Thanks! I’ll definitely take a look at that!
