Best Laptops for Engineers: Seeking Recommendations

Our engineering team, who utilize MatLab, has been given the green light to choose their laptops without budget concerns. We're looking for machines that meet specific criteria:

- At least 16GB of RAM, though 32GB might be preferable for future-proofing.
- A 1TB SSD for ample storage.
- Excellent battery life to support long days filled with meetings and travel.
- No need for a discrete GPU since they don't use CAD software.

I'm considering the new Dell XPS models, but I've noticed some changes to the trackpad that I'm not sure about. The CEO playfully suggested MacBooks, which might actually be a good route since our marketing department already has them set up in our MDM. What are your thoughts on the best options?

Check out the Dell Pro Max 16 Premium; it’s the new version of the Precision 56xx line and is a solid machine for engineering tasks.

I've worked with a 5570 at my job and a 5490 at home, both are fantastic! I second this recommendation.

A good option could be to give them a choice between a MacBook and an AMD ThinkPad P16, as the AMD models tend to have better battery life. Engineers can be pretty particular about their tools, so catering to their preferences is essential.

As a Linux user, I fully agree with this suggestion!

If you're considering options, I’d recommend the HP Z series. Keeping it to one manufacturer can simplify warranty and support issues. The Lenovo P series is also good and worth looking into, as well as Dell’s Precision range.

Just a heads up that saying they 'don’t really need CAD' could mean they use it occasionally, so check compatibility if you're leaning towards MacBooks. There might be some software limitations.

I suggest you look into Dell's Premier account if you're going with Dell. However, keep in mind that XPS laptops are consumer-level and may not be the best fit for engineering needs. They might be phasing out soon too.
