Avoiding Frustration When Mounting Switches Alone: Any Tips?

Mounting switches, especially Cisco ones, in a four-post rack can be quite challenging when you're doing it solo. While server lifts are super helpful, they can also be a hassle to use. I'm looking for suggestions on any tools or devices that can assist in temporarily holding a switch in place while I secure it. It gets tricky when I'm trying to mount switches around the 38-39U range, particularly when there's nothing directly above or below to support them. Bonus points if the solution is portable enough to fit in a carry-on!

Rack studs can also help. Not a personal favorite, but they’re great for solo setups. We’ve started using them recently, and it definitely makes life easier!

Exactly! I’ve used them a couple of times, and they really simplify the process.

Glad someone else recommended them. It really does make things easier!

One approach I've used is to screw in a small server shelf just below where you're mounting the switch. You can install the switch and then remove the shelf after it's secure. It sounds basic, but it works!

Yeah, I do that too when installing heavy disk trays. Nothing like balancing a pricey switch with SSDs on top!

What I usually do is screw in two screws just under the switch's mounting point, leaving them out a little. You can rest the switch on those screws, and it gives you the support needed to match the holes. I've been at it for years and have never damaged anything while doing it this way!

Been doing the same for decades. It’s quick and you always have screws around.

I always leave the screws out enough to hook the ears on. Just don't forget the bottom screws! That's where most people mess up.

Left hand under the switch with a screwdriver in the right, and extra screws in your mouth! It's a bit of a circus act, but it gets the job done. Just be careful not to choke!

HR’s going to love it when I accidentally swallow a screw while trying to stabilize everything.

One falls down, and suddenly you feel like a T-Rex trying to work around!

I came across a product called "Setup.exe" from PatchBox. The name is kind of lame, but it seems to do the job. Here’s a video showing it in action: https://youtu.be/TlAv9zDn4iA. Just keep in mind, it can be really pricey.

Cool device, but wow it's expensive! And seriously, who thought that was a good name?
