I've got an old HP all-in-one desktop that I want to transform by installing either Linux Mint or Ubuntu. My main goal is to convert it into a home server primarily for storing photos. In the future, I'd also like to upgrade it to enable remote access and even start a gaming archive. Any advice on the best way to go about this?

You might want to consider using a Network Attached Storage (NAS) Linux distribution for your project. It's designed specifically for storage and remote access, offering a cleaner web interface for managing everything. Check out OpenMediaVault (OMV); it's free, open-source, and runs on various hardware, from Raspberry Pi to big servers. It's super popular for DIY NAS setups!
It's amazing what old hardware can do! I have a computer from 2009 that easily runs similar setups. You might be surprised at how capable your HP can be with the right software.
Have you heard of OpenMediaVault? I’m using it on my mini PC to store movies and connect through a VPN for streaming. You can manage your pictures and other files just like a personal cloud storage system, similar to Google Drive. Best of luck with your project, it will be fun!
Sounds like a solid plan! I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but transforming your desktop like that is a great idea, especially if you're into storing and accessing files remotely.
