Hey everyone, I recently fell victim to a scam on WhatsApp involving a substantial amount of money. I'm wondering if there's any way to trace the scammer's IP address using the messages and photos we exchanged. I do have the scammer's phone number and transaction details, which I believe might be useful for filing a police report. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you share the details of how the scam happened? It might help others avoid getting caught in similar traps.

If you want to trace an IP, remember that even the public IP you might get won't necessarily help you, especially if they're using a VPN. Just file that report and see what the police say. Getting your money back is going to be tough, though, since they often operate from different countries.

Definitely file the report. However, brace yourself; a lot of these scammers are really hard to catch. They tend to be in places where it's complicated for local authorities to act.

You can't extract an IP address from messages or photos like that. Modern messaging apps keep all that data on their servers, so you won't get the scammer's actual IP. The best way would have been to get them to click on a link that could capture their IP, but that's a bit tricky. Also, even if you get an IP, it might just lead to an innocent person or some random coffee shop.

Honestly, your best bet is to file a police report. Tracking down the scammer isn't really something you should have to deal with. Even if you manage to find their IP address, it might only tell you they're in a different country, which doesn't help much. Plus, a lot of scammers use VPNs, making tracing them virtually impossible anyway.
