Help! My Unsupported Laptop is Acting Up and I Can’t Access My Files

I installed Windows 11 on my unsupported laptop about two years ago, and recently I've been having some major issues accessing my files. I attempted to use Iobit Unlocker to gain access, but it still requested admin permissions, even though I'm the only admin. I tried changing the owner in the file properties but had no luck. After suspecting a potential issue with the registry, I installed Iobit Advanced System Care, which claimed to fix everything. However, the next day, I found I couldn't open the Start menu, search, or any Microsoft Store apps. Windows then notified me that my OS was out of date and unsupported. I was running version 22H2 at the time.

I then updated to 24H2, which seemed fine until I encountered the same file access issue. While attempting to change file ownership again, there was a sudden power cut. When I restarted my laptop, I found my Chrome profile was missing users. After a troubled boot-up and some unsuccessful attempts at uninstalling updates, I finally managed to log in but lost all my files except for the Iobit applications. I cannot perform a system restore either, as it shows no backup was available despite me having backed up my data before all this happened. I'd really appreciate any help in resolving these issues!

You might want to reach out to your laptop model's community for more specific fixes. There are instances where you just need to enable a few BIOS settings to make it compatible with Windows 11. If you can't get it to work, reverting to an older Windows version or exploring a solution like Ubuntu could alleviate some of your stress while also protecting your data. Good luck!

It sounds like you've had a rough time with your laptop. First off, modifying system files or settings on unsupported hardware can lead to data loss, so definitely test your backups regularly! As for your current dilemma, if your laptop isn't officially supported for Windows 11, that could explain the issues.

If you're still having trouble accessing files, it might be worth visiting the system settings to ensure your disk isn't corrupted. If you can operate within Windows, you could try using alternative file recovery software to retrieve lost data. If all else fails, consider downgrading to Windows 10 where you'll have extended support until 2025. That could be a more stable option for your laptop.

I completely get how stressful this can be. You mentioned your BIOS; have you checked if anything went wrong there? Sometimes, tweaking settings can inadvertently cause data issues—you might need to check if Secure Boot or similar options are enabled for your Windows 11 installation. Additionally, if things keep going awry, switching to a lightweight Linux distro could provide some relief and a fresh start with your files. Just make sure to back up the little data you have left before making more changes!
